Safeguarding Children and Young People

Over the last two years Bradford Safeguarding Children Board have been working in partnership with the Voluntary & Community Sector (VCS) to raise awareness of the safeguarding responsibilities of everyone who works with children and young people and support the development of safeguarding standards and practice within the sector.

Through an appointed VCS Development Worker, Debbie Cordingley, some key milestones were achieved:

  • The development of an audit tool that has been used extensively by groups and projects to develop and review their organisational policies and procedures around safeguarding children
  • Model policies to provide baseline information for groups and projects on what should be included
  • A Safeguarding Handbook designed specifically for Voluntary Sector Groups and projects to enable them to take ownership of the Every Child Matters agenda around keeping children safe from harm
  • Capacity building support provided to over 200 Voluntary & Community Sector groups and projects
  • The development of tailored training for the VCS around Safeguarding Children and Young People

Debbie's role ended on the 31st March 2009. Her legacy includes various Safeguarding resources and information as above that have been based on her experience of working directly with groups and projects across the district. The post has been a huge success and provided the "bridge" that has enabled extensive engagement between the Safeguarding Children Board and the valuable work that takes place within the Children and Young People's Voluntary & Community Sector.

To ensure the work continues, a joint funding arrangement has been agreed between Bradford Safeguarding Children Board and Young Lives Bradford (formerly the Children and Young People's VCS Network) based at Bradford CVS. Through the provision of a new Information Officer Post all the safeguarding resources and information Debbie has collated on behalf of the sector will be managed through Dionne Norman, Young Lives Bradford.

Dionne will also be able to signpost groups and projects across the district to available safeguarding training and will be keeping up to date as well as circulating relevant Safeguarding issues that will affect groups and projects across the district. Dionne can be contacted on 01274 722772 or e-mail dionne@bradfordcvs.org.uk
